Richard
McAvoy, the Vineyard’s Oenologist will give us a guided tour. The
vineyard was established in 1984 with a first planting of just 6
acres. This has now been increased to 18 acres of vines in the 40
acre estate with further plantings in the planning stage.
Some of the grapes grown at Wickham include Pinot Noir, Rondo,
Bacchus and Reichensteiner which are all typical of the UK. Work in
the vineyard continues throughout the year with pruning comencing
straight after the harvest and maintenance needed to be carried out
including pest and disease control.
Wickham has one of the most modern and equipped wineries in the
country and is housed in fantastic 200 year old barn. When you
enter the winery you will see all the equipment used for crushing,
pressing and the fermentation of the grapes as well as the filters,
tanks and oak barrels used to age the wines.
The stainless steel tanks are all temperature controlled and oak is
used to age our Fume and the Special Reserve red. We pay particular
attention to the amount of oak that is extracted into the wine so
that they achieve a good balance.
Bookings to be received by 7th August 2010 c/o
The Treasurer.
Form in the June 2010 Newsletter.
