Prior to being appointed Director – Europe for New Zealand Winegrowers in May 2009, David Cox was the Managing Director for Brown-Forman’s Wine operation in Europe. Brown-Forman, headquartered in Kentucky, USA, are the owners of the leading spirit brands Jack Daniel’s, Southern Comfort and Finlandia Vodka and the international wine division was set up in 1992 following the purchase of Fetzer Vineyards and Bonterra Vineyards in California and the Bolla winery in the Veneto, Italy. The company also owns the prestigious Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards winery in California.
David was recruited in 1995 to set up a European presence for Brown-Forman Wines and, through a small London-based sales and marketing organisation, he built the portfolio successfully, especially Fetzer and Bonterra, from about 40,000 cases in 1995 to over 1 million cases in 2008. David had previously spent 10 years working in sales management and was Export Director at Matthew Clark Plc., the firm having been originally founded by his great-great grandfather in 1810. He was the last Cox/Gordon Clark family member to leave Matthew Clark prior to its metamorphosis and subsequent sale to Constellation Brands. Prior to that David had worked outside the wine industry at Xerox Corporation in sales and sales management.
